Why we built Sobat
We built Sobat because of what we saw happen on real journeys — from the moment someone leaves their home town, not just the airport. An elder standing at a connection. A parent alone with young kids, juggling bags and a stroller through an unfamiliar gate. Someone hoping for a familiar language nearby, not just an empty seat. Airports today feel like entire cities — easy for anyone to get lost in, and harder still for someone doing it for the first time, or alone.
It became personal for us more than once. My mother-in-law started flying alone between the US and India, and even on a direct route, she’d often find no one on her flight who spoke her language — more than once, someone had to fly from the US just to bring her back safely. My wife travelled at a time she could really have used a hand nearby, and later I travelled alone with our kids — both times, having someone on the same journey who understood would have made it easier.
That’s also why we built the Sobat Safety Card — a few lines about who to call and what matters, so if something goes wrong, the person helping doesn’t have to guess.
Sobat exists so no one has to travel that unsure again.
